Pre-recorded shownotes
Intro
Hello and Welcome to Scuttercast 28, this week I'm joined by.........Quarantine
Synopsis
The crew answer a distress call from the hologrammatic Dr Lanstrom. Rimmer is dispatched back to Red Dwarf, much to his disgust, so that the crew can bring Dr Lanstrom back: however, they discover that she has contracted a holovirus and is barking mad. The crew escape, taking with them the viruses Dr Lanstrom had discovered, including a luck virus. Meanwhile, back on Red Dwarf, Rimmer has been boning up on Space Corps Directives and slaps the others into quarantine for three months. After five days, they’ve nearly killed each other, but when they ask to be released as per directives, they find Rimmer has contracted the holovirus: he sentences them to two hours W.O.O. (without oxygen). They use the luck virus to escape and to defeat Rimmer and his co-conspirator Mr Flibble. - again by Smeeeeg Heeeed
Episode Review
Scene 1
According to Wikipedia, this is the first episode we have come across that was directed exclusively by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. Juliet May was the Director brought in for this series, but found it difficult to work with sci-fi. I've read that she left of her own accord...on Wiki. I've also read that Rob and Doug let her go on the DVD inlay card. One site even suggested that she was brought in to deliberately struggle so Rob and Doug could take over the directing. But that seems a bit severe!!

Snowy type moon base, with Starbug coming into land

It doesn't land though. If you look closely, it hovers a few inches above the ground!!

also looks like its hanging over the edge at the back, but i did think the jets blowing down when it lands look pretty good

Kryten suggests "launch scouter", Rimmer says he's in charge of security and surveillance aboard the vessel.....since when ?
Everybody just ignores him

Scouter finds a research facility with a survivor, Dr Hilderguard Lanstrom

The Scouter looks like an Empire Strikes Back Imperial probe

but she's a hologram, so they need to switch off Rimmer
.
Back to being only able to sustain 1 hollogram on the "Crimson Short one"

They'll make thier minds up about this one day!! When they refer to Rimmers "remote projection unit", do they mean his light bee?

so they want to turn off rimmer to allow them to bring on a doctor because the doctor will be use full, but surely there was doctors on red dwaft they could have booted up if they wanted ??

Big speach about the space core directives, and Rimmer gets a holographic version of the book

Scene 2
On the base looking for the doctor

Find a sign saying "Viral Research Dept., Most gross danger, Bio suits must be worn at all times"

This psy-scan is a lot different to the Backwards version. The commentary suggests it was made from a sandwich toaster. Don't know how true this actually is!

Also, I notice that we are shooting at Sudbury pumping station again. You know how Who fans go on shoot location tours, how easy would a Red Dwarf shoot location be?!!

All throw this episode it seem the camera was hand held, they was a lot of wobbling about

Kryten finds some bottle of something, and bags them

He finds the case they are in and remarks how "extraordinary" it is...before he's even oopened or looked inside the box. How did he know this was a good find before he'd opened the box?

Lister triggers a pod, and out pops Lanstrom

As she sits up, I noticed that Lister is in his long leather trench coat again!!
She a hologram with flashing red eyes (why would she be in a stasis pod ?)

I thought that she is a hologram and can live for as long as there is power on the ship

She fires "lasers" out of her eyes, and they leg it

As she says the line "Life without pain has no meaning", Kryten replies with a line. But the audio has been cut so all we get is about a second or two of Kryten's mouth silently moving!!

Scene 3
Rimmer complaining to Holly about Kryten....how he's changed

Love Hattie's acting on screen here. Hard to believe that she is sat elsewhere looking into a camera and not actually responding to Rimmer in front of her!

Lister and Kryten radio in, telling Rimmer about Lanstrom, and he plays a very similar part to Back to Earth

She shoots the walky talky out of their hand, and talks to Rimmer

She even manages to say Hello without moving her lips.

The console then "fizzes"
The pod they send Rimmer back in, seems to be the same pod as last week ? Did they just send back the light bee ?

Didn't they call it an escape pod? Are escape pod's and Ore sample pods the same thing? Or maybe similar in design!!

Scene 4

the 3 are looking around for Lanstrom, and discussing the Hex vision

Kryten, explains that Lanstrom was in the stasis pod because she was preserving whatever life she had left, as the hex vision drains the life force......but she's a hologram....

She finds them, goes to zap them, but disapears....

Is Lanstrom a hard light hologram, because at one point, she appears to be holding onto the fence!

Scene 5

Kryten explains about the positive viruses

inspiration, charisma, sexual magnetism & (Felicitus Populi) luck

Just after he gets injected, the hyperdermic gun vanishes...also, Listers hat is in his hand. This also vanishes!!

wonder what would have happen if they had injected them all at once :)

Lister picks out all the aces

Has to be the dodgiest shuffle EVER!!! Penn and Teller wouldn't have got far in thier career if they had been as bad as that!

Left hand, not looking, bullseye.....dart
Hollys says they can't access the landing bay, Rimmer has put in an override ?......Doesn't holly run the Dwarf, and wouldn't he have to request that she did it....being a hologram ?

Bay 47.... Quarantine...space core 595...

It is also mentioned on the DVD inlay, that Bay 47 is the same car parking bay that Listers alter-ego, Sebastian Doyle uses, in Back To Reality!!

room 152...for 3 months

What did you think of Krytens designer triangle handbag thing!!?

All in a single room, as Lister is the only registered member, however last episode Kryten was addition 001 ? Doesn't that make him a member ?

Why would a non-crew member have a security door access code like Kryten last episode? What about Cat too? Surely he is also an additional crew member?
.
The inlay says that this is the bunkroom set redressed, which it fairly obviously is. Logically, all of Red Dwarf bunk rooms, including Quarantine would look similar anyway! The panel that reads Quarantine suite 152 is there to hide the top bunk from view for this single bed bunkroom!

Every meal will be sprouts
sprouts crumble lol
Lister says he's not going to let Rimmer get to him....boys from the Dwarf...

Scene 6

Lister has a black eye...

Cat has a bust nose and his arm in a sling

True to Cat form, the sling matches his shirt!

2 hours for Kryten to panel beat his head back to shape

Why does he panel beat his head nto shape in the shower? Does it have a panel beaters workshop in there?

assume it's only 5 days

When Cat and Kryten are falling out, they touch foreheads when facing off against each other. This leaves a big dark make up smudge on Krytens head which then vanishes a couple of shots later.

Tetchy.....
.
Even if they are all trapped together in the same room, surely Kryten wouldn't really turn Tetchy the way he does? Seems uncharacteristic. Also, what is the Multi Purpose white Graph board actually for?
.
699, rescreening....
.
If they can prove or disprove thier infection with a simple screening, why didn't they?

Rimmer appears at the window... wearing a red and white checked gingham dress and army boots

According to TV.com, there was a 3 minute segment of this scene that took 57 minutes to film and was cause for concern for Rob and Doug who had only booked the studio for 2 and 1/2 hours!! Which is weird, because the commentary says of the "Tetchy" conversation, that they had managed to do all of that section in one take!!!

If you watch carefully, barely a camera shot changes without the crew moving out of position from the previous shot. This shows how many retakes had to be taken and why Rob and Doug hated filming it so much!!
.
Rimmer has lost it....

He can't let them out because the king of the potato people won't let him :)
So, let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet to see the King of the Potato People and plead with him for your freedom, and you're telling me you are completely sane?! I think that warrants 2 hours of W.O.O. (without oxygen)

So were is holly in all this? does she not control all of them systems ?

7 mins of air....
so they use the luck virus and crack the code

Looks like Lister was just randomly hitting the buttons. cr@p code anyway 1 2 3 4 5 etc...

They plan on heading for the heading for the hologram projection room

Rimmer finds them, and has Mr Flibble on his hand (marketing genius !)

According to the commentary, the Flibble puppet was actually a temparory prop made for the rehearsals. But all other puppets were rejected and Mr Flibble won out for the main puppet part!!

Why does Mr fibble sounds a little northern but later he as a total different accent

Rimmer tries to fry them with his hex vision... so they leg it

Kryten suggest that he would have the capable of telepathy and possibly even telekinesis like Lanstrom ?.....did she have these or did I miss it ?

Was that when she open the satsic pod when lister got close ?

Rimmer moves an axe into the back of Kryten....and then he loses it a little....

He then cuts down a door with his hex vision and again they leg it

Kryten suggests that they use the luck virus

They need a remote link to the hologram disk projection system

Then a exangonal power transfer adapter capable of holding spikes of up to 5 million volts

Then a B47/7RF resistor

How long is this luck virus lasting, as the other one lastest about a minute ?

He had a extra big dose :)

Kryten uses the device and purges the virus

Scene 7
Rimmer wakes up in quarantine, and they are all wearing gingham dress
Scores
7/10 Good Story, good idea, a few flaws, many memorable moments...the hex vision, mr flibble, gingham dress and the whole "king of the potato people"

9/10 Love Rimmer in this episode. Not rehashing old idea's that we've seen before. Chris Barrie playing Rimmer as more mental than normal!!

8/10 very good episode, i think they all played a good part in this, this is one of the episode that u all ways remember especially the hand puppet.

Danny John Jules has taken part in the Iron-Butts charity motorbike ride which is 6500 miles approx circumnavigating the Mediteranean sea in 15 days. This is in aid of Sport Relief. There is a blog telling of his adventures at Ironbutts Blog

The official site has announced that Jon Glover will be joining Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn at this years Dimension Jump. He appeared as the customer in the Back To Earth CostCutter scene. He's talking to the salesman in the TV department as the Dwarfers arrive to this reality! I knew he'd been in Harry Enfield but his IMDB is full of lots of interesting roles. He seems to have specialised in comedy roles and childrens TV. Should make for an interesting guest with some good stories!!

Antony tells us about his iPod accessories, in particular, FM Transmitters and AV cables. The one I recommend the most was less than a fiver from eBay FM transmitter. The ones I have had in the past have never lasted long, but the cheapest one seems to be the best designed...and is so tiny!!
Image
It also comes with a car cigarette lightersocket plug that connect to the side of the transmitter...but is the same size as a small mobile plug...not the flat iPod plug in, so should be easy to replace if you have problems.

The AV cable is awesome for watching stuff I have downloaded to my iPod on ”Big Tele”
This picture is slightly misleading....the image isn’t that clear!!

Hey guys, another great show! I had a think and here are some possible answers to the questions you mused on:

1. When did Rimmer get promoted to Chief of Security and Surveilance?
Rimmer, being Rimmer, thrives on power no matter how small or petty. Like declaring himself Acting Captain/Acting Senior Officer in Series I & II, the position of Chief of Security is one he has probably elevated himself to in order to boss the others about.

2. Why is Red Dwarf no longer capable of supporting two holograms?
As evidenced by 'White Hole', Holly is getting increasingly senile. Perhaps as her intelligence decreases she's forgotten how she managed to run two holograms simultaneously. Another answer is that the capability to run two holograms might have been lost after the Hologram Simulation Suite was destroyed in 'Queeg'.

3. What is a Remote Projection Unit?
It is possible that the Remote Projection Unit is a machine onboard Starbug that generates Rimmer via his lightbee whilst he is away from Red Dwarf. Whilst Holly is able to project him whilst he is aboard the ship, the Remote Projection Unit might take over from her whilst he is away from Red Dwarf.

4. Why bother to rescue Lanstrom's hologram when they could boot up a doctor from Red Dwarf?
Just because they could activate the hologram of a deceased Red Dwarf doctor or surgeon doesn't mean that the lads from the Dwarf will just abandon Lanstrom to an eternity trapped alone in her base. Plus, Lanstrom is from the relative future of the crew and so will probably have even more advanced medical knowledge than any doctor onboard Red Dwarf.

5. Why is Lanstrom in a Stasis Booth?
Perhaps there is not enough power in her base to sustain her hologram indefinately. Plus, the virus sends her psychotic and reduces her runtime, so it would make sense for her to go into stasis (a stasis field freezes whatever is inside of it, be it organic or mineral) in order to preserve what life she has left and to await more victims.

6. Are Ore Sample Pods and Escape Pods the same thing?
In the Space Corps Database on the official website, the entry for 'Escape Pod (Ore Sample Pod) it says:
"This pod is strictly for mineral use. It is NOT an escape pod. We don't care if you've crashed on a psi-moon or you need to send your hologram back to the mothership - get yourselves out of your own problems. ROOM FOR TWO PERSONS"

7. How does the Psi-Virus drain Lanstrom's lifeforce if she is a hologram?
Lifeforce is probably just another name for the level of power in her batteries.

8. Why didn't Holly intervene with Rimmer's enforcing of the quarantine protocols?
Rimmer gained access to the captain's confidential files in 'Waiting for God' and probably learnt all the codes and passwords that gave him unrestricted access to everything on the ship. Maybe amongst the information in these files was a guide to bypassing Holly (presumably the crew would have this information to hand in case Holly developed a fault or bug and had to be shutdown). Failling that, perhaps Rimmer turned his psi-powers on Holly in order to keep her out of action whilst he enforced his revenge on the others.

9. Why are they given single accomodation?
Rimmer is taking his petty revenge here by obeying the word of the law instead of the spirit of the law. Whilst Cat and Kryten are additionally registered crewmembers of Red Dwarf, Lister is only one in quarantine who is an employee of the Space Corps. Cat and Kryten aren't members of the Space Corps and so are therefore not recognised as part of the crew of Red Dwarf.

10. Why didn't they get a rescreening sooner?
They're playing Rimmer at his own game here by playing it by the book. Plus, a viral infection may not show up straight away.
