oriSTUDFARM's Podcast of the Week

Postby ori-STUDFARM » Tue Mar 24, 2009 7:34 pm

Out of all the ScutterCast crew, I am probably the one who gets through the most podcasts in a week. I drive plant vehicles at work and use podcasts to help my day pass by without time seeming to drag. I used to work over 70 hours although recently, due to economic cutbacks, this has been reduced to about 50. All of this time is spent listening to podcasts. Some I hear are excellant, but I often find ones that are an absolute waste of time. And, apart from the iTunes listeners reviews, there is no way of telling until you've actually listened. So, I have decided to give my recommendations and, maybe help our listeners find other podcasts they can enjoy. I shall update this first posting in this thread to keep my recommendations in one place, but please, feel free to comment on my choices, let me know what you thought and even suggest ones that I may enjoy myself.

Episode 1
For the first ever Podcast of the Week, I have decided to select Starbase 66. This can be found on iTunes or at http://starbase66a.podbean.com/ .
The hosts of the show are, sitting in the Captains chair, Adm. Marius (Rick), Weathereye (Kennedy) and Ro-Karen (Karen). This is a fairly new podcast that has been months in the planning. All three are HUGE Star Trek fans, although this podcast is NOT Star Trek exclusive. It is a general Sci-Fi discussion podcast. They have so far covered topics such as "Star Wars", "Sci-Fi Celebrity Douchebaggery" and "Sci-Fi Guilty Pleasures". They also feature guest voices from the world of podcasting to join them in thier discussion. And, no doubt, they will be covering the new Trek movie when released!! Please, check it out and enjoy :D

Episode 2

The second Podcast of the Week goes to Geek Out Loud. This can be found on iTunes or at http://geekoutpodcast.com/. This is a show hosted by "Big Honkin" Steve who usually hosts alone or sometimes with a friend. "Big Honkin" Steve is one of only 3 or 4 podcast hosts that I have come across that is able to present solo and still make a good podcast. Most solo podcasters fail to entertain. Geek Out Loud is a podcast that covers comics, TV and movies. Steve himself is a big Star Wars fan, Superman fan, Smallville fan etc... A recent guest co-host has introduced him to Doctor Who and we have heard him change from indifference to the show to a full blown Who fan!! In Steve's own words, Geek Out Loud is a place for anyone to come and Geek Out safely without the fear of ridicule. Although you may get a small bit of stick if you're male and obsessed with Twilight!! (Not really, he chooses not to comment....much! ) So, feel free to check it out without the fear of ridicule.

Episode 3

Due to my computer difficulties, I was unable to appear on ScutterCast this week. The third Podcast of the Week has been selected by BassJunkie and, by some weird coincidence, he has chosen the exact same podcast that I was going to! :D . This weeks podcast is Here Goes Nothing and can be found and downloaded on either iTunes or from http://heregoesnothing.podbean.com/. A large ammount of podcasts are basically audio recordings of a couple of people "chatting". How good these are is dependant on how entertaining the hosts are, and Boz and Dave are very entertaining indeed. The show has Boz and Dave "filling you in" on their week and general musings. Whether it's what occured at the latest squash match or a nostalgic look back at childhood theme tunes or even experiences as a teen ballet dancer, it always entertains. The show also includes a beer of the week review that I find handy and I ALWAYS look forward to hearing Boz's "rant of the week"!! So, please, check out Here Goes Nothing. :)

UPDATE. THIS PODCAST IS NO LONGER AT PODBEAN AND CAN BE FOUND AT http://WWW.SIMPLYSYNDICATED.COMaNOTHER QUALITY PODCAST PICKED UP BY sIMPLY sYNDICATED.

Episode 4

This weeks podcast of the week goes to Nerd Hurdles . This podcast is produced by Jakob and Mandi and takes a look at all things nerdy. If you or anyone you know struggles to do something, be it watch a TV series, wear a certain style of clothes, a type of music to listen to, a sci-fi convention to attend etc..., then the obstacle that these and other problems present is known as a Nerd Hurdle. Jakob and Mandi take a humorous look at some of these hurdles, and let you know thier opinion! (And Mandi's opinion is gospel...even when she's out of ear shot!! ) The podcast can be found at http://ampersand.podbean.com or do a search for ampersand on itunes. Previous nerd hurdles looked at include following celebrities on Twitter, Transformers, Role Playing etc.... You can even check out old episodes of Jakobs previous podcast at the same address. This was Preview Reviews where Jakob reviewed a book without reading it or a film without viewing it or an album without hearing it. His only thing to make his opinion on was maybe the book cover or the movie trailer or maybe it's poster or the 20 second sound clips on itunes... Any way, well worth a listen, you will not be disappointed!!

Episode 5

This weeks goes to An Apotheosis of a Bombast. This is produced by Scot Copperman of the US of A and Elton McManus of the UK. It is a typical podcast of 2 guys talking. They discuss thier observations from the week. It might be an interesting or a funny website they've found or maybe something from the news. They have discussed such things as Simon Cowells plans to have his head cryogenically frozen upon his death, and even uncover what appears to be sinister goings on at the companys management levels. Other subjects involve time travel or the website, Death note. They will notify any on-line friends of your passing should you die. Also included Godzilla with Scot's son "offering out" Jakob from the Nerd Hurdles podcast ..... Very entertaining and well worth a listen. Can be downloaded from iTunes or from http://bombastpodcast.podbean.com/2009/ ... -egg-hunt/ Give it a listen, I'm sure you'll enjoy!! :D

Episode 6

This weeks goes to Cadmiun 2. It's one of the first podcasts that I found. I started in July 08 and, when Red Dwarf was entered as a podcast search in itunes, Cadmium 2 is the only one that came up. Its a Britsh Cult TV podcast. The hosts are Paul, Andrew and Mike. Paul has heard scuttercast and has been onto the forum. They review Doctor Who in the same way as we are reviewing Red Dwarf. (Only they were first!) We have 50 odd episodes to review. They have apprximately 700-750 episodes of Doctor Who!! They don't do one every time though. They do one or two then review some other cult TV show. They have reviewed series 1 already and they put ScutterCast to shame with the easter specials by getting that review out on the Sunday, only hours after the third parter was aired!! They record differently to ourselves. They review from the same room, whereas we use a Skype conference call!! You can find them on itunes by searching for cadmium 2 or at the following link http://cadmium2.wordpress.com/ Even if you just listen to the two Red Dwarf episodes, give this one a try!!

Episode 7

This week I have gone with British Invaders. Eamonn from the UK and Brian from Canada give us their reviews of TV series and movies that are considered "cult" TV. A similar podcast to Cadmium2 , they have reviewed everything from Red Dwarf to Threads, the documentry which looks at the events of Nuclear war! Lots of Sci-Fi reviews including the likes of Blake 7 and also a look at the TV horror, Beasts. A really good and entertaining show. Lots of research. The enthusiasm they have for these shows really shows through. Especially from Brian during the Red Dwarf episodes!! You can find them on iTunes, just search British Invaders or at the following link. http://www.britishinvaders.com/ Don't forget to tell them that we sent you!! :D

Episode 8
This weeks podcast was cause of excitement for me, when the man himself sent me a rather nice e-mail along with his latest promo! The podcast is Scott Siglers Audiobooks. He started doing the podcast a few years ago when, as a struggling author, he was having difficulties in signing book deals and getting noticed. He signed up to Podiobooks website and started to release his novels in podcast format. He soon gathered a huge following and it wasn't too long before he got his first book deal. Now, his books have a tendancy to break into the NY Times top 25 best sellers lists and he is an established author of Horror and Sci-Fi. Yet, in showing how grateful he is to his on-line fans, he continues releasing his works free of charge as podcasts.
******WARNING*******
His novels are NOT aimed at children. They are full of violence and contain lots of "adult" language and situations

To find his podcasts, search iTunes for "Scott Sigler" BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU SELECT. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PRESSED THE PODCAST LINK BUTTON AS HIS WORKS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE IN THE AUDIOBOOKS SECTION WHERE THEY ARE NOT FREE!! You should find a podcast link for "Scott Sigler Audiobooks". This is his latest work and basically goes back over his last 90 casts. You won't find all of his works on this feed, just his current work. However, his older works are still listed on a seperate feed. Currently there is Infected, Contagious, Earthcore, The Rookie, Nocturnal, Ancester and his short stories, Bloodcast 1 and Bloodcast 2.
The links for his works without using iTunes are-
http://www.scottsigler.com/ for his current feeds
http://www.podiobooks.com for his archived works. In the search window type Scott Sigler and you will get a full list of his works available

Episode 9

This weeks podcast of the week has been chosen by Tony (AKA CyntaxError) It is a Star Trek Audiodrama called Star Trek Excelsior. This was a new one on me so I have listened through this today. It is a very good drama done in a similar style to the Doctorwho Audiodramas or even the Novo-B fictionshed project. I've copied and pasted this from thier webpage as it says it better than I could!!
Welcome Aboard! You're about to embark on a journey of the imagination and the human spirit; a tale of triumph and tragedy; of difficult choices and consequences; of friends and jokes and snowball fights. The crew of the Starship Excelsior flits between the stars of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek universe, and, in learning of new life and new civilizations, she and her crew will help chart--we hope--the paths of the human experience. And you, the listener, are going to join them. Welcome back to Star Trek, in a fan-made radio show that will comfort you with its familiarity and surprise you with its freshness. Welcome aboard the Excelsior.
It can be readily found on iTunes or you can upload from http://www.starshipexcelsior.com/episodes.php. But be sure to check out the whole website. A must for fans of the Trek!!
